How to Enable a Third-Party Keyboard on iPhone
Installing a third-party keyboard on iPhone is straightforward, but the steps for enabling advanced features vary by app. Here's the general process:
- 1Download from the App Store. Find the keyboard app (Acti, Grammarly, SwiftKey, etc.) and install it like any other app.
- 2Go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard. Find the keyboard you installed and tap it to add it to your active keyboards list.
- 3Grant permissions if prompted. Open the keyboard app itself first — many need initial setup before they appear properly in the keyboard switcher.
- 4Switch keyboards while typing. Tap and hold the globe/emoji icon in the bottom-left of the keyboard to switch between installed keyboards.

Cloud vs. On-Device Processing
Check the app's description or privacy policy to understand where AI processing happens. On-device processing is more private; cloud processing may be more capable. Many apps use a mix — sensitive input stays local, complex queries go to the cloud.
Sensitive Text Fields
iOS automatically switches back to the default keyboard for secure text fields (passwords, credit card numbers). This is a system-level protection — third-party keyboards cannot access these fields even with Full Access enabled.
